Cyprus Launches Digital Renewal of Residence Permits for Third-Country Nationals
Cyprus has taken a significant step in digitalising its immigration system. The Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection and the Migration Department, in cooperation with the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, have launched a new digital service allowing renewal applications for specific categories of third-country-national residence permits to be submitted entirely online.
Which permits are covered
At this first stage the service covers renewals only — not initial applications — for the following categories, and, for the employment categories, only where the worker continues with the same employer or company:
- Temporary residence permits for paid employment;
- Temporary residence permits for domestic employment;
- Temporary residence permits for employees of Foreign Interest Companies;
- Temporary residence permits for family reunification (family members of long-term residents and of Foreign Interest Company employees); and
- Long-term resident permits.
How the new service works
Applications are submitted through a verified CY Login profile — by the permit holder, by the employer on the employee's behalf, or by an authorised representative such as a law firm acting under a written authorisation. Nearly every stage is handled electronically: completing and filing the renewal application, attaching the supporting documents, managing the authorisation, receiving status updates, paying the prescribed fees electronically once vetting is complete, and selecting a service point for the final steps. Physical presence is required only where the process demands it — principally for signature and the capture of biometric data.
The Migration Department expects the service, at full operation, to absorb around 73% of all renewal applications in the covered categories and roughly a quarter of all residence-permit applications of every kind — a material reduction in queues and processing friction. It is described as the first package of the Department's digital services, with further electronic procedures to follow.
What it means in practice
For employers — particularly Foreign Interest Companies managing multiple third-country staff — the change turns a paper-based, in-person renewal cycle into a process that can be run centrally and remotely, with only one attendance for biometrics. Because authorised representatives can file on an applicant's behalf, renewals can also be handled end-to-end by counsel.
